About Jeanne's
A little history on how Jeanne's Bakery became a Winnipeg tradition. It started with a royal visit to Winnipeg in the late 40's. The Royal Family was being entertained at Government House and Jeanne's Bakery supplied danties. The products were enjoyed so much by the Royal Family that Jeanne's was granted the privilege of becoming the purveyors to the Royal visitors at Government House. This was during the time that Sir Daniel Hunter McMillan was the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. Jeanne Van Landeghem, who the bakery was named after, would go to Government House to have danties and tea with the Royal Family.
Some recent history that shows the popularity of Jeanne's Cakes came about the summer when Jennifer Lopez came to Winnipeg to film a movie. During the filming she had a birthday, and Winnipeg wanted to show their appreciation by giving her a Jeanne's birthday cake. It was enjoyed, and two weeks later two more cakes were ordered. Monty Hall, a famous Winnipegger who now lives in California, always picks up a Jeanne's cake when he visits.
With this wide spread appeal for this unique cake, and when walking through the airport, you see people bring this tradition to their cities. We know that there's much work ahead to make it available nationwide and perhaps even internationally.
